| Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

| Choosing between a male or female dog is truly a matter of personal preference. Every dog is different and choosing the right dog is no easy task. The difference between male and female dog is minor. The only thing you must consider is that a female dog is in heat twice a year, during which she will behave differently, have a discharge from the rear and later on end up having descendants if allowed to breed. The male dog will demonstrate sexual excitement every time there is a female dog in heat nearby, and when you take him out for a walk he's more likely to lift his paw and leave his scented smell as a way of marking his territory. Both male and female peculiarities are greatly lessened if the dog is spayed or neutered.

| While dogs stay healthy and active, it is not necessary to vary their food. The best advice is to look for diets that best pleases the dog and to vary it a little. All animals are conservative in their nutritious habits; it is a naturual defense. The changes alter the balance of hormones and enzymes that regulate the digestion and assimilation. The sudden changes in a diet can inevitably cause problems, if it is necessary, introduced it gradually.
From time to time, a small adjustment may be necessary to maintain a desired weight, but do not lean toward the obesity side, rather keep them lean. When time is warm, for example, the dog may require less food because they are less active and they need less heat to maintain its core temperature. During the winter the consumption of foods will be increased.

| The correct hour to feed your dog its meal will depend of the owner's convenience as long as it does not vary from one day to another. Dogs will not exercise after a meal. Voluminous foods should not be distribute late in the afternoon since dogs will be needing the night to rest. Most owners find it convenient to give out lighter food early in the afternoon. Food time is the main part in the dog's life and the schedule should be maintained the same, it is for dog's best interest and for the peace of the house.

| The water represents two thirds of the dogs' weight. To maintain a healthy life it is essential an adequate consuming of water in which could be partially or fully provided through the meals. We must take in consideration that the body's main necessity is drinking water. It is impossible to determine an exact quantity of water needed by a dog since dogs vary in their diet, exercise and weather situation. We know that all animals obtain their energy through food, which helps them to grow, to maintain, to reproduce and to have the energy to move. Mammals are animals with hot blood and they need energy to maintain a constant temperature. How much energy an animal may need depends on its weight and size. The smaller the animal the bigger his core surface area when measuring his weight proportion. The dog will experiment a big lost of heat needing more energy per unit by his weight to maintain his core temperature. The lost of energy can also be related to an activity and increases with exercise and work. Age, individual nature, gestation, nursing and other conditions control the quantity of food as part of the energy. The food provides energy by means of the digestion of proteins, fat and carbohydrates.

| Puppies and dogs training are two different realities, much like a child and man training. As a kid is not a miniature man, puppies are not minature dogs. In younger ages the mind's learning ability is completely different, and react to stimulation in a very different way than adults. A kid or puppy's mind is like a sponge absorbing millions of pieces of information that adults will find difficult to digest, or that they will simply ignore. Therefore, if you want a trained and obedient dog, you better start training them young. Some years ago it was usual to wait until the puppy was one year old to start his training, because it was considered that before that age they were too young. The only thing they were taught not to do, was to not poop in the house. This would be like starting school at twenty years of age. Kids would probably love this idea, but we all know it's not the right way. The most adequate age for learning is youth, though it's necessary to adapt lessons to the possibilities of a developing mind. When young, the dog also discovers the hierarchic order within the pack, the puppy learns there is a boss, and status differences. If the animal does not accept rules from his first months of age, and does not learn to respect superiors, then he becomes an unsettled being, unable to live in groups. When puppies enter home for the first time, they instinctively tend to evaluate the "hierarchic ranks" of the family members, to identify the leader, to know who can he trust, who to follow, and with whom can he only play, without expecting something in reward. The puppy needs the leader's figure to give him confidence and security. That figure is a human being that replaces the mother first, and the pack leader afterwards. It's like a ten years old kid having to do the job of city mayor, assuming all the responsibilities of that position. Obviously he won't be a happy person, the poor kid would become deeply confused, would not sleep at nights, overwhelmed by his job. This explains why a puppy must be directed and educated. It also explains why he must be trained in the basic house rules, like potty training as a baby.

| The inspiration that led to the adoption of the English bulldog as the official Marine Corps mascot came from World War I-era German soldiers. Legend has it that the Marines were referred to as “teufel-hunden,” (“devil-dogs”), the vicious, wild mountain dogs of Bavarian folklore, because of the Marines’ relentless method of attack that turned the tide as the German Army approached Paris. In June 1918, the Marines repeatedly repulsed the Germans in Belleau Wood, ending the offensive to take the city. Soon afterward, a Marine recruiting poster painted by artist Charles B. Falls appeared depicting a dachshund, attired in a spiked helmet and Iron Cross, fleeing from an English bulldog wearing a helmet bearing the Marines’ globe and anchor insignia. The painting’s inscription read, “Teufel-Huenden—German nickname for U. S. Marines—Devil Dog Recruiting Station.”
The first officially enlisted Marine Corps mascot was an English bulldog christened Jiggs. Brigadier General Smedley D. Butler inducted him into the Corps as Private Jiggs with a formal ceremony on 14 October, 1922, at Quantico, VA. Eventually promoted to ultimate Marine rank, Sgt. Major Jiggs presented the Marine colors throughout the world, and was featured in the 1926 Lon Chaney film “Tell It To The Marines.” Upon his death in 1927, SgtMaj. Jiggs was interred with full military honors. His satin-lined coffin lay in state in a hangar at Quantico, surrounded by flowers from hundreds of Corps admirers.
• For decades, official mascots were called “Smedley” to honor their first inducting sponsor, Gen. Smedley D. Butler.
• “Chesty” became the most used named beginning in the 1950's, to honor legendary Lt. General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller Jr.
• Chesty III was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his behavior with children.
• Present mascot Corporal Chesty XI enlisted Aug. 24, 1995.
